Kidney mycosis
Agent Exophiala spp. (E salmonis, E. psychrophila)
Hosts Atlantic salmon, lake trout, but also other cultivated species.
Location Kidney interstitium and nephrons.
Type of lesion Granulomatous with extensive proliferation of macrophages and multinucleated giant cells.
Special features Hyphae stain poorly with standard H&E, but are easily demonstrated in PAS-stained sections.
Diagnosis Demonstration of hyphae in granulomatous lesions (PAS) and the isolation and characterization of the causative agent in culture. Differential diagnosis include BKD and mycobacterial infections.
