Sphaerosporidosis
Agent Sphaerospora sp.
Hosts Most freshwater species, esp. cyprinids.
Location Glomeruli, tubular lumen and interstitium.
Type of lesion Diffuse haematopoietic necrosis and haemorrhage (presporogonic stages). Destruction of glomerular capillaries, dilatation of Bowman's space, thickening of Basement membrane and haemorrhage (sporogonic stages and developing pseudoplasmodia). Dilatation of tubules and flattening of epithelium (sporogonic stages).
Special features  
Diagnosis Characteristic lesions in tissues SBA lectin may he used to demonstrate Sphaerospora sp. in tissues. Important differential diagnosis are PKD, toxic damage.
