Location Kidney interstitium and nephrons (+involvement of several other organs).
Type of lesion Necrosis of haematopoietic tissue, glomerulonephritis, enlargement of Bowman's space and inflammatory response.
Special features  
Diagnosis Isolation of the causative organism requires tissue culture (without antibiotics). Smears and imprints stained with acridine orange using fluorescence microscopy. Important differential diagnosis are VHS/IHN.

Piscirickettsia salmonis detected in tissue imprint (May-Grünwald-Giemsa).
