Kidney Diseases:
Mycobacterial infection ("Fish tuberculosis") and Nocardiosis
Agent Mycobacterium fortuitum, M. marinum
and Nocardia spp.
Hosts Most fish species incl. aquarium fishes.
Location Kidney interstitium.
Type of lesion Multifocal, chronic, granulomatous. Multinucleated giant cells.
Special features Intracellular. Stains poorly with H&E.
Diagnosis Demonstration of acid-fast bacteria in lesions, isolation of the agent. Differential diagnosis are BKD and fungal nephritis.
