Bacterial kidney disease (BKD), Dee disease
Agent Renibacterium salmoninarum (Gram +)
Hosts Salmonids.
Location Primarily kidney interstitium with secondary involvement of the nephron (route of infection probably important!), other organs may also be affected.
Type of lesion Chronic, granulomatous or pyogranulomatous, sometimes with caseation and cultivation. Macrophages and neutrophils dominate the inflammatory process and are often full of the causative bacterium.
Special features Intracellular.
Diagnosis Gram staining (+), PAS, Immunohistochemistry. Differential diagnosis include mycobacterial infections and fungal nephritis.
