Kidney Diseases:
Bacterial septicaemia
Agent Vibrio spp., Yersinia ruckeri, Aeromonads, Pseudomonas spp. etc.
Hosts All species to variable extent.
Location Interstitium of peritubular capillaries, spreading to interstitium and nephrons.
Type of lesion Diffuse degeneration and necrosis. bacteria scattered in the tissue.
Special features Many manifestations depending on type of agent, host and temperature.
Diagnosis Patho-anatomic diagnosis based on lesions, agent determination requires isolation of the agent and/or immunohistochemistry. Viral septicaemia may be important differential diagnosis.

Bacterial septicaemia caused by Vibrio salmonicida. Note the necrosis of interstitial tissue and degeneration of kidney tubules.
