Postdoctoral research scientist in the Aquatic Vaccine Unit (AVU) at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling.
Project: “Development of a recombinant vaccine against salmonid proliferative kidney disease (PKD)”.
Three year project funded by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and Schering-Plough Aquaculture.
Director of the Board and member of the General Committee of the Scottish Sub-Aqua Club.

October 2001 – 2004:

Full-time doctor of philosophy (PhD) student based in the AVU; funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, Aquaculture Vaccines Limited [now Schering-Plough Aquaculture] & the Fishmongers’ Company.
PhD thesis title: “Culture of malacosporeans (Myxozoa) and development of control strategies for proliferative kidney disease”.
2003-04: Postgraduate (research) student representative on the Board of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Stirling.
2002-04: Part-time position as teaching assistant for the MSc courses in Aquaculture, Aquatic Pathobiology & Aquatic Veterinary Studies.
2002-03: Treasurer of the Aquaculture Students Association.

September 2000 – September 2001:

Postgraduate taught student in Aquatic Veterinary Studies at the Institute of Aquaculture.
Received scholarship from the Fishmongers’ Company.
Employed as a Temporary Veterinary Inspector by MAFF [now DEFRA] during UK foot and mouth disease outbreak.
Graduated as Master of Science (MSc) with distinction.
Awarded medal by the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland for best overall performance on Aquatic Pathobiology & Aquatic Veterinary Studies MSc courses.

July 1994 – August 2000:

Employed as a veterinary surgeon in mixed species general practice in Scotland.
Main interests related to production animal medicine, surgery & reproduction, with particular reference to the dairy cattle industry.
Also involved extensively in companion animal care, encompassing a wide range of species.

October 1989 – July 1994:

Undergraduate student at Glasgow University Veterinary School.
Graduated as Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery (BVMS).
Became Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS).

Interests:

Now mainly based around entertaining our three young children, but when time permits: scuba diving (ScotSAC Master Diver Instructor), computing, underwater hockey, swimming, cycling, skiing, music & dining are heartily enjoyed!
